FOCUS Margin Desk user guide

Margin Desk compares the prices you charge with your supplier's new costs, shows every product that falls below your target margin, and helps you decide new prices. Everything runs on your computer. Nothing is uploaded.

What is gross margin?

The share of the selling price you keep after paying the supplier. Sell for $12.50 and pay $10.00: you keep $2.50, a 20% margin. When the supplier raises the cost to $11.00 and your price stays at $12.50, the margin falls to 12%.

Start in two minutes

Open START.html and choose Explore the example first. Open a product in Review to see the four ways to set a new price.

Then choose New and work through the four steps on the left.

1. Your prices

Load the products you sell from an Excel workbook (.xlsx) or a CSV export from your sales system: product code, current cost and selling price. Supplier, product name, customer, unit and quantity are optional. Excel CSV files, including Japanese Excel (Shift_JIS), are read directly, and amounts such as "¥1,250", "1,250円" or "$12.50" are understood.

If your file has no unit or supplier column, enter one value for every row. If prices differ by customer, include a customer column; each customer price is reviewed separately.

2. New costs

Load the supplier's new price list: product code and new cost. Products are matched by supplier, product code and unit. If the supplier writes names or units differently ("ACME LTD" or "EA"), match them to your price list on screen. Units are never converted: a box is not treated as 12 pieces.

Margin Desk shows how many products found a new cost, and which did not.

3. Review

Set your target margin and how new prices are rounded. The summary shows how many products are now below target and, if your file has quantities, how gross profit changes if prices stay the same. When your prices list customers, Effect by customer shows each customer’s products below target and profit change, largest first, so you know which conversations to have first; select a customer to see only their products.

Changing the target margin, rounding or currency clears earlier decisions, because they were based on the old setting.

4. Export

Download the approved prices as CSV for your sales system or ERP, a CSV of every product, or an HTML report to share. Nothing in your other systems changes until you import these files there.

Price change letters create one draft letter per customer listing the approved changes, with the current price, the new price and the change in your own purchase cost. Open the file in a browser, click to edit the wording, and print each letter on its own page, or open it in Word.

Saving

There is no autosave. In the Windows app use File › Save (Ctrl+S). In a browser, Save downloads a .json file; confirm once the download has finished. Reopen it with Open. Exports are separate from the saved file.

Limits and scope

This edition supports 5,000 products and 5,000 new costs per review. You see results for every product; exports include up to 25 products. Maximum 16 MiB per file. One currency per review: JPY, USD, EUR or GBP. Figures are gross profit at the quantities supplied, not a sales forecast or net profit. Excel workbooks (.xlsx) are read directly; older .xls files must be saved as .xlsx or CSV first. Not supported: currency or pack conversion, tax, PDF import, automatic price changes in other systems.

Privacy

Files are read on this computer only. The app makes no network requests. Saved files and exports are not encrypted; keep them under your company’s file controls.
